How music-driven neurofeedback can elevate your sport

By Jur Vellema, M.D. and Chief Medical Officer alphabeats

At alphabeats, we’re on a mission to transform how athletes train. We believe that the mental aspect of performance is what distinguishes elite athletes from the rest, and that it’s a skill that you can train as rigorously as any other.

By merging popular music with neuroscience, we've unlocked a powerful instrument for tuning mental performance, focus, and recovery. How did we do it? Before we dive into the specifics, let's take a look at the science behind our approach.

‍

What is neurotech?

Neurotech is the use of technology to unlock the mind's power. Its tools range from wearable devices to software that analyzes brainwave data. The focus is on enhancing brain function in order to provide insights into how we think, feel, and perform.

As consumers, we’ve come to rely on wearable devices that help us track our biometric signals and indicators for physical health. Now, with neurotech, the field is evolving to encompass not just our bodies, but also our minds. It’s moving for the first time from medical labs into our everyday lives to transform both individuals and industries. The technology today has the potential to boost productivity, increase safety and help us reach past the existing boundaries of our personal potential.

‍

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a category of neurotech, and it’s at the heart of what we do at alphabeats. It's the science of measuring brain activity and giving you real-time feedback that you can use to influence how those brainwaves work. The process is completely non-invasive. Small sensors within an EEG headband read your brain’s electrical signals and the data is then crunched to provide insights to enhance your mental state.

This technique isn’t just about tracking though. It involves understanding and interacting with the range of brainwaves, whether gamma, beta, alpha, theta and delta, where each is associated with different aspects of brain function. For example, alpha waves are linked to relaxation and meditation, beta waves to alertness and concentration, theta waves to creativity and insight, delta waves to deep sleep and gamma waves to high-level cognitive functioning.

By actively engaging with your brain's rhythms, neurofeedback helps you sharpen focus and improve mental recovery. It makes every training session count more, not just physically but mentally as well.

The special sauce of alphabeats is that we combine neurofeedback with curated popular music tracks to help you master your alpha waves and access them whenever you need.  This blend of science and sound opens up new ways to train, recover, and excel, setting alphabeats apart from traditional mental training methods. It’s what leads us into our exploration of the profound impact of sound on performance.

‍

The science of sound and performance

Music’s power over our minds and bodies is well documented.  It can uplift spirits, calm nerves, and sharpen focus. Or in the words of Bob Marley, “One good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain.”

That’s why its integration with neurofeedback made so much sense to Han Dirkx and I when the developer team at Philips first showed it to us.

As an orthopedic surgeon with experience treating athletes, I had long realized that a main barrier to full recovery and returning to peak performance was, in most cases, mental. Han, a tech entrepreneur, artist, and meditator, also understood the challenges of quieting the mind to achieve focus and flow.

We acquired the technology in 2019 and built alphabeats around it.

Fast forward to today, after five years of research in and outside the lab, this special blend of neurotech is ready for the mainstream. We’ve tested, trialed and tweaked it with the pro athletes we designed it for. Why athletes? The decision centers on a few factors, such as their willingness to experiment with new technology to gain the competitive edge, and the unique pressures and stress of performing in high stakes environments.

Our society as a whole has also been waking up to the importance of mental wellbeing. And this cultural evolution hasn’t missed the world of sports. Athletes, including high-profile figures like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps, have openly addressed their mental health, underscoring the importance of proactive strategies such as meditation and neurofeedback.

That’s where alphabeats comes in. It’s a dynamic training tool that is both effective and enjoyable. Its unique combination allows you to tap into your alpha waves and other optimal mental states, enhancing both performance and recovery.

Transforming training with real stories

We’ve been putting our neurofeedback technology to the test both in-lab and in the field with professional athletes since our founding in 2019. This real-world application has shown us just how transformative neurotech can be across the range of sports, from solo competitions to team dynamics.

Athletes from various disciplines have improved their mental performance with alphabeats. Triathletes, known for their grueling training schedules, report better mental clarity and focus during competitions. They credit alphabeats for increasing their endurance and reducing mental fatigue.

Meanwhile, pro athletes in sports requiring intense concentration and quick reflexes, like taekwondo and show jumping, also report major benefits. They highlight how the neurotech helps them maintain focus under pressure and recover faster between rounds or events. These athletes have shared stories of pivotal competitions where alphabeats helped them remain composed and perform at their best, even in the most high-stakes scenarios.

These real-life applications and testimonials build a compelling narrative about the effectiveness of alphabeats where it matters – in the field and in life.

The net net? alphabeats is more than just a training tool—it's a pathway to mastering the mental game. Whether you're a professional athlete or an aspiring one, alphabeats provides the edge you need to perform at your best.
